Sprinkler blowout in Edmonton should be booked in late August or the first week of September, earlier than most Alberta homeowners assume. Edmonton's season closes ahead of Calgary's, and no city issues a date to remind you.
Why Edmonton is earlier
Edmonton's green season is compressed at both ends. Fall transition begins in late August, and hard frost arrives sooner than it does further south.
Book in late August or early September for a date in the second half of September. Waiting for a freeze in the forecast means calling when every irrigation crew already has a waiting list, and Edmonton's crews have fewer weeks to work through that list than Calgary's do.
Do not forget the drainage side
While you have someone looking at the outside of the house, this is the right time to check where your downspouts discharge. Edmonton enforces lot drainage under Drainage Bylaw 18093. Downspouts cannot be connected to weeping tile, discharge points sit at least one metre from the building, and connecting a downspout to the sanitary service has not been allowed since 1988.
A frozen line and a flooded corner of the yard are the same problem arriving in two different ways.
Sequence it with overseeding
If you are aerating and overseeding this fall, new seed needs water for two to three weeks. Overseed in late August, water through mid-September, then blow out. Reversing the order kills the seed.
